The men walked into the house, at Calderhall Terrace, through an insecure back door about 6.30pm on Wednesday, December 5.

Once inside, the men demanded money from the terrified victim. The house was ransacked as the men searched for money in an ordeal that lasted approximately 15 minutes, leaving the 88-year-old in a state of shock and in need of medical treatment to minor injuries.

Both men left the house with a three figure sum of cash and a quantity of jewellery and disappeared from sight.

Appeal raises £2,500 for home and away

A HOME and away appeal in West Lothian has raised about £2,500 so far.

But it's nothing to do with the TV programme of the same name.

The money is being split between Open Door, from West Lothian, and the Romanian Street Children Charity.

About half of the total raised so far came from a tombola day in West Lothian House, the headquarters of West Lothian Council.

"We had a tremendous day," said organiser Christine Calder, "and would like to thank everyone who donated either on the day or in the run up to the event.

"We had an amazing 170 prizes for our Tombola and still have around 40 for our next event.

"Young people both in West Lothian and Romania who are homeless find Christmas a very difficult time and you can be assured every penny raised will go to making it a better day for these unfortunate individuals."

Catchment area changes in Livingston

West Lothian Council’s Education Executive has approved a scheme of new catchment areas covering five primary schools in Livingston.

Pending approval by Scottish Ministers the changes will come into effect in August 2008.

West Lothian has the fastest growing population in Scotland and Livingston has one of the youngest, which has placed extreme pressures on some schools.

The council went out to extensive public consultation over its plans to review catchment areas covering Bankton, Deans, Livingston Village, Peel and Toronto primary schools.

“ We carried out this review of catchment areas to take account of current pressures, the  continuing population growth in the town and to make the best use of available school facilities,” said Executive councillor for education Andrew Miller.

“ We are planning for the future. Our local schools must meet the needs of the children who attend and the communities they serve. We gave full consideration to all points raised by local residents in carrying out this review.

“ We plan to carry out improvements to travel-to-school routes and consult with our planners over the phasing of new housing sites as part of the agreed scheme. ”

Councillor Miller added: “ Population growth in Livingston has placed extreme pressures on some of our schools.  Livingston Village had an intake last year of 38 children into a single class – the Scottish Government and the Educational Institute of Scotland have set  targets of 18.

“ The option agreed will see the re-zoning of several housing areas to schools that will have the capacity to cope with local children.  It will also see five existing streets moved from Livingston Village to the catchment area of Peel primary school.

“ We did examine the possibility of extending the village school, but it would have required a 10-12 class organisation on an already very limited site. This would have cost in excess of £1 million, created a complex set of composite classes and would not have improved the educational experience of any of the children.”

Local licensed premises aim to be 'best bar none'

A NEW Scheme is to be launched in West Lothian aimed at reducing crime and the fear of crime in and around local licensed premises.

Bars and nightclubs which meet the 'Best Bar None' standards will be issued with an award.

Licensed premises taking part in the scheme will be rigorously assessed and inspected by a multi agency panel of experts looking at four main themes:

  • prevention of crime and disorder
  • public safety
  • prevention of public nuisance
  • protection of children from harm.

Councillor John Cochrane, Chair of the West Lothian Licensing Board said, “I fully support the very worthwhile Best Bar None initiative. It’s an excellent opportunity for West Lothian Council to work in partnership with both Lothian and Borders Police and the licensed trade towards the shared goal of creating a safer environment in and around bars and nightclubs in West Lothian.”

Chief Superintendent Chris Griffiths from Lothian and Borders Police, said: “Best Bar None presents the licensed trade with an opportunity to help us reduce alcohol related crime and disorder in our towns and villages.  The scheme will assist us with our goal of ensuring that West Lothian is a place where people can work, live and socialise in safety.”

Mum's ambition after death of young son

A LIFELONG Rangers supporter, Craig McNeil's funeral was held on his 21st birthday.

And inside the coffin of the former Armadale Academy pupil, his mother, Margaret, placed a signed autograph of Celtic manager Gordon Strachan.

For Craig met the Celtic manager at the Edinburgh hospital where he spent the last few days of his life, just a week after taking ill with Arteriovenous malformation (AVM).

"Talking away to Gordon Strachan meant so much to Craig," Margaret told West Lothian TODAY, "It's a deadly illness and it didn't just rob Craig of a future. He had told me if anything ever happened to him he wanted his organs to be donated. But the illness devastated his organs, meaning another six or seven people could have had a life."

The illness, caused by missing capillaries in one area of the brain, is like a time bomb ticking away inside many people. But it can be picked up by a scan and treated . Now Margaret is campaigning for the population to be scanned for AVM.

And she's planning to hold ongoing fundraising activities in order to raise money for the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, which is carrying out research into the illness.

The first big fundraiser will take place in The Goth, Armadale, on March 1 and includes a whole host of activities, including a disco, chef for the day, slave for the day, maid for the day and auction of paintings.

Margaret has been trying to pick up the pieces of her life, since Craig's devastating death in August 2006. And she's been attending art classes in a bid to fulfil one of her ambitions. "By holding the fundraisers, I want Craig's death to mean something," said Margaret, "but the only adult picture I have of Craig is his work's photo.

"I want to do an oil painting of my son."

Pensioner left terrified after stones thrown at bus

A WEST LOTHIAN pensioner says she was left terrified after a group of secondary school age children started stoning the bus on which she was a passenger.

The incident happened in Carmondean about 3.40pm on Monday, November 26.

The OAP, who asked not to be named, told West Lothian TODAY: "The passengers got a good fright when we heard a great big bang.

It was teenagers throwing stones and other things at the bus windows. Can I make an appeal to these pupils: Please Stop and think. You are risking passengers' lives plus that of the bus driver. Would you like it if your sisters/brothers parents grandparents etc. were on a bus that someone was firing stones at and they took a heart attack or if your stupidity caused the driver to have a bad accident.

"Driving when it is getting dark and the roads are busy with traffic is bad enough without school kids throwing missiles at the bus windows."

Christmas menu with a difference at local restaurant

A WEST LOTHIAN restaurant is providing a Christmas menu with a difference this year.

The Beefeater restaurant at Deer Park, on Deer Park Avenue is offering an extensive range of seafood options perfect for festive family get-togethers.

The menu includes cuisine such as grilled half rock lobster, Atlantic scallops wrapped in Parma ham, to Sea-Bass fillet with dauphinoise potatoes and ratatouille.

Younger members of the family are also catered for with their very own menu and child-sized portions.

A spokesman for the restaurant said: "Seafood is not only a great alternative to turkey, it is also kinder to the waistline, as fish is naturally low in fat and high in omega 3 & 6 oils which is essential for healthy skin, hair and nails, not to mention growing kids. So you can have your fish and eat it, without any of the usual post-Christmas guilt."

If you fancy a turkey-free Christmas, call 01506 439202.

West Lothian MP wins top political award

LIVINGSTON MP Jim Devine has won The Herald Scottish Politician of the Year Award for Campaign/Campaigner of the Year 2007 for his work on the Farepak Campaign

The award follows on from Jim being named as the hardest working Scottish MP.

Speaking after the Awards Ceremony Mr Devine said: "It’s absolutely brilliant to have been nominated by the Herald, and to have the opportunity to receive this award on behalf of the Farepak campaign. It is an honour to represent my constituents and to have the chance to pursue justice for the victims of Farepak in Parliament. This Award is a recognition of the hard work of hundreds of people , and is testament to the sheer scale of this ongoing scandal.

"The collapse of Farepak was an absolute disgrace and I will not stop fighting for my constituents and families across the UK. I recently raised the matter in the house and have tabled an EDM to get the minutes of a meeting between HBOS and Farepak held in February 2007, released.

"I’m over the moon that the Farepak campaign won this award and wish to pay tribute to the ongoing work of the other nominees in the category: the Haemophilia  Group and The Stockline Families Support Group."

Extra funding welcomed

THE Chairman of Deans South Homeowners' Association, Sean Milligan, has welcomed recent developments on behalf of his members.

Earlier this week, West Lothian Council's executive agreed to increase the council's contribution towards the purchase of individual homeowners' properties in the stricken street to £19,093 plus £800 disturbance

Mr Milligan told West Lothian TODAY: "The new SNP administration have recognised the need to move the situation forward and this will allow individual owners to move on with their life.

"The Homeowners have from the very beginning supported members prepared to accept the revised proposal and also recognise the situation is far from being resolved.  We fully intend to work with the new SNP administration in finding a mutually acceptable solution agreeable to all interested parties.

"It's disappointing to see that some of the Labour members are still determined to undermine the process and less keen to move the situation forward.  We look forward to continued dialogue and consultation with both West Lothian Council and Community Scotland in the near future."

Tobin fails to appears in court for second day running

PETER Tobin (61), the man accused of murdering teenager Vicky Hamilton, was unable to attend at Linlithgow Sheriff Court again on Friday morning, November 23.

It's the second day in a row Tobin has been unable to attend.

He is receiving treatment in Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary after being attacked by an inmate.

Legal proceedings will continue in his absence and he is likely to be committed for trial .

There was tight security at the court on Thursday and Friday, following last week's angry scenes.

Vicky's sister Sharon (36) and twin brother and sister, Lee and Lindsay (23) have expressed their sincere thanks to the inquiry team from Lothian and Borders Police for finding their sister and bringing her home.

They added: "This is a difficult time for us all but the knowledge that Vicky will be reunited with her mother gives us solace and a degree of comfort. After 16 long years we are thankful we can finally grieve for Vicky and give her a proper burial. Vicky going missing ripped the family apart, not only did we lose a beloved sister, we also lost our mother who died through heartache never knowing what happened to her daughter.

"Our thoughts are also with Dinah's family; we understand exactly what they are going through and offer our support and comfort at this time.

"Thank you all, Sharon, Lee and Lindsay."

Farepak MPs meet Prime Minister

LIVINGSTON MP Jim Devine was one of five Labour MPs fighting for justice for Farepak savers who met with Gordon Brown after Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday afternoon, November 21.

The issues they raised with the PM were:

  • Return of the Farepak savers' money, including how much the Liquidator can return and the outstanding amount (approx £29 million) needed to pay back savers in full
  • Justice for the savers - the enquiry into the collapse of Farepak by the Inspector of Companies and the lack of transparency if there is no prosecution
  • Legislation regarding pre-payment schemes such as Farepak, as opposed to voluntary ring-fencing of the money placed with voucher schemes

A copy of the report commissioned by UNISON and published this week which outlined the impact that the Farepak collapse had on those effected was provided to the PM.

Jim Devine said: “The Prime Minister said  he was well aware of the  problems  the Farepak collapse had caused for many low income families, especially as some of his constituents lost money with the scheme.”

Gordon Brown undertook to look at the regulatory framework for the pre payment industry to see what needs to be done to make sure that savers would receive protection in future and gave a commitment to come back to the MPs on all the issues they raised on behalf of those affected by Farepak .

Extra funding agreed for stricken Deans homeowners

"No council house building is going to be cut and no tenant is going to lose a penny's investment in their home because of this decision."

That was the words of the Leader of West Lothian Council, Peter Johnston, after the council's executive agreed to increase the council's contribution towards the purchase of individual homeowners' properties in Deans South to £19,093 plus £800 disturbance.

Councillor Willie Dunn called for the £3,556 increase to be met by The Scottish Government and Communities Scotland. He said: "The district valuation should be met, but it shouldn't be us funding it and it shouldn't be coming out of the Housing Revenue Account."

Councillor Johnstone responded: "No tenant will be deprived of any repair or programme in order to facilitate this."

Councillors look to cut speed limit on Armadale to Whitburn road

COUNCILLORS are to take a second look at reducing the speed limit on a stretch of road between Whitburn and Armadale which has already claimed the lives of two people this year.

It had been recommended to the West Lothian Council's executive that the speed on the B8084 be reduced from 60mph to 50mph.

Officials said consideration had been given to a 40mph limit, but said it would not be appropriate without significant additional traffic calming meausres, which would be difficult to achieve on a rural road.

Councillor Peter Johnstone told the executive: "The recommendation has the support of four local members. We should send it back to the local area committees for further discussion, but we need to deal with this with some urgency."

Community investment plan will make West Lothian a better place says council leader

"We are planning to spend £2.7 million on road casualty reduction schemes to make our roads safer. This is a 50 per cent budget increase.  We are determined to provide real improvements to our traditional town centres with £2 million allocated to these areas. We also plan to spend £1 million on the Burgh Halls project at Linlithgow. Another £5 million will be spent to ensure accessibility to council facilities for disabled people.”

Councillor Andrew Miller said: "It is based on need, not on whims."

A Labour amendment to the strategy was defeated by 10 votes to 2.

A WEST LOTHIAN shop which sold alcohol to a 17-year-old four times in one evening in September, has been allowed to keep its licence by West Lothian Licensing Board.

Police had called for the suspension of the licence pertaining to the Spar shop at 17 Crofthead Centre, Dedridge, and showed a video recording of the transactions to board members.

But a lawyer for C J Lang, the company which operates the shop, told the board the fact that an employee had made an error did not make the company no longer fit and proper to hold a licence.

"The company policy is 21 and CJ Lang carry out their own test purchases," he added. The lawyer also told Board members that C J Lang had a comprehensive training scheme for employees.

Board member Willie Dunn moved that the licence not be suspended. "The internal system for checking stores seems to be fairly robust," he added.

Calling for the licence to be suspended, Board member Alex Davidson said: "On the evidence I have seen, there was no question asked re proof of age or anything else."

The board voted 6-3 not to suspend the licence.
